Summer of ‘42 my father driving us through FORT RILEY, Kansas, when we were stopped by the M.P.’s. Fort Riley was home of the 9^th and 10^th Cavalry Regiments of the U.S. Army.  We waited by the road for a few minutes and then suddenly about 300 horsemen came charging right across the highway, hooves thundering, banners flying, our whole family watching with mouths agape at this spectacular display of military might.
